WE SET OUT TO DESIGN SOMETHING THAT WAS RELAXED AND EASY BUT STILL GRACEFUL AND ELEGANT. WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT CHINA, YOU THINK ABOUT THESE INCREDIBLE TEXTILES AND THE BEAUTY OF NATURE. SO TO TAKE THAT AND MERGE IT WITH FASHION AND HAVE THIS HYBRID EASY PAJAMA WITH A CHEONGSAM FEMININITY—IT’S THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS.
Every spring, a bevy of sartorial sensations grace the grand staircase at the entrance to The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala. The gowns, many custom-made, take inspiration from the theme of the exhibit, playing up a punk-chic mood one year and nodding to the fashion fantasies of the flapper era the next.
This year’s Costume Institute exhibition, “China: Through the Looking Glass”, explores the impact of Chinese aesthetics on Western fashion. In celebration of the show, Michael Kors has designed a set of Mandarin evening pajamas for volunteers from Vogue to wear during the glamorous event. The floral-patterned silk pieces were inspired by classic Chinoiserie patterns and come in shades of deep blue and mint with blossoms of pink, cream and pale orange that mirror the evening’s extraordinary décor.
We asked Gao Yuanyuan to try the luxe loungewear on for size, as she got ready to attend the fashion party of the year. Scroll to see the patterns at play.
