As one of the world’s most in-demand models, Joan Smalls needs no introduction. A campaign superstar and runway favorite, the 28-year-old’s chameleon-like beauty has also made her a highly coveted face outside the fashion industry, working across everything from presenting gigs to cameos in high-profile music videos (hello, Beyoncé). We took five with the Puerto Rican beauty to talk style, fitness and—testament that she’s a woman after our own hearts—where to snag the best piña colada in her home country.

What is the most memorable Michael Kors runway show that you’ve walked in?
The first show I ever walked for MK was memorable because I had always wanted to walk in his show. He’s such an American staple of fashion, and I’ve always admired his work.
Michael Kors Collection Spring 2017 had many facets to it: from ‘80s style power suiting to ‘70s florals. Which is more your style?
The power suit, hands down. It’s a classic piece and women always look so chic and sexy in a suit.
Who do you look up to and why?
I look up to people who are ambitious and anyone who follows their dream and makes it a reality.
How would you describe your personal style?
Relaxed/sexy. Tomboy/sexy. Sporty. Comfort is everything.
What is the best style advice you’ve ever been given?
To always be yourself and never dull it down.
If you could only use three beauty products for the rest of your life, what would you use?
Mascara. Lip balm. Eyebrow pencil.

Where is your favorite destination in Puerto Rico?
Oceano restaurant in San Juan has really delicious local food with a twist of elegance. Parrot Club in old San Juan has really good piña coladas and great food as well.
When do you feel most yourself?
When I’m in the countryside in Puerto Rico, surrounded by nature and animals.
If you could swap lives with someone for a day, who would it be and why?
A monk, most likely. I would love to feel at complete
peace and experience enlightenment, with no worries.
It’s your birthday, who are you with and what are you having for dinner?
Pasta, with my boyfriend and close friends. Super simple and low key.
How do you stay healthy when traveling so much?
I make sure the hotel I stay in has a gym, and I work out every other day for an hour.
What’s your favorite workout?
Muay Thai kickboxing. It’s a martial art that empowers you.
